Multiplayer or Solo

Enhance collaboration and teamwork through the power of multiplayer simulations in Acadicus. Our platform allows multiple participants to come together in a virtual environment, regardless of their physical location. Each participant can see and hear each other, interact with the scene and objects, and engage in realistic, hands-on training.

For more personalized or independent learning, you can switch to ‘Solo Mode’ where each guest entering the room is in their own instance, and cannot see or hear other users, ensuring privacy and undisturbed learning or recording experience.

Simulation Manager

This dashboard enables instructors and facilitators to trigger patient animations, change vital signs, and other scene variables.

Multiple Casualty Incident (MCI) Virtual Simulation

Acadicus is in the process of forming an alliance of EMS organizations and municipalities interested in sponsoring further development of this multiple casualty incident (MCI) virtual simulation.

An initial proof-of-concept scene can be visited through the Acadicus Commons and will be expanded to include additional patients, animations, and other scene variables.

Scene Controls

Instructors have access to a dashboard of controls, including scene audio and a Simulation Manager panel to control explosions, patient vital signs, ambulance lights, animations, and more.

Technical Capabilities

Bill Ballo

Bill has been in EMS since 1997 and EMS Education and simulation since 2008. Bill is a graduate of St. Petersburg College with an A.S. in EMS and an A.A. in Liberal Arts. He attended the University of Florida where he earned his B.S. in Telecommunication in June of 2007. Bill earned his Master's in Public Health from the University of South Florida in December of 2012. Bill is currently leading efforts to help faculty learn and utilize technology, including Virtual Reality, in all aspects of education at Madison College in Madison Wisconsin.

Bill's current title is Faculty in Academic Technology in the Madison College Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). Bill continues to be involved in EMS Education on the Local, State, and National level.

Virtual Airway Management

1st Edition: November 2020

This virtual medical simulation includes an interactive airway manikin patient, an immersive 3D operating room environment, basic intubation capabilities, along with a variety of interactive equipment.  Expert instructors provide 3D recorded demonstrations to follow along with as many times as needed.

OpenRN: Scenarios 1-7

These scenarios described below are part of 25 virtual simulations that will be developed to complement 5 OER Nursing textbooks, collaboratively written with faculty from Wisconsin Technical Colleges and reviewed by statewide nursing faculty, deans, healthcare alliance members, and other industry representatives.

A public room in Acadicus will be created for each new scenario, where multiple people can join and interact the simulation from any location simultaneously.   

Alignment with Courses:

Pharmacology – Cardiac Meds; Skills – Administer Medications; Fundamentals – Communication an d Cognitive and Sensory Deficits

Overview of Scenarios: 

In a long-term care room, student must obtain vitals and appropriately administer cardiac medications with different patient conditions: furosemide 20 PO mg daily; metoprolol 25 mg PO daily; lisinopril 20 mg PO daily; Cardizem LA 180 mg PO daily

Scenarios:

1: Routine medication administration performing 5 rights and vital signs WNL

2: Vital signs out of range

3: VS out of  range; patient has dementia and refuses BP procedure and  meds

4: VS out of range; family member in room is concerned

5: VS out of range with fever; patient has delirium from an infection

6: VS out of range; patient does not speak English 

7: VS in range but potassium out of range

Description of Levels of Simulation: 

1. Associated H5P Branching Scenarios:  Students answer questions regarding medication administration with various patient situations to prepare for scenario or include in textbook(s).
2. Group video Broadcast:  Instructor logs into Acadicus and leads scenario while broadcasting to student group; students direct actions of instruction with avatar patient as a team
3. Immersive VR:  Student provides care for a patient in one or more of these conditions

• Environment:  Nursing Home Room
• Character:  Adult Elderly Male
• Wearing: Hospital Gown
• Position:  Lying supine in hospital bed
• No arm band in Nursing Home
• Family members: Wife at bedside in Scenario 4
• Animations:  Agitation or confusion  in some scenarios
• Other disciplines in room: None; must call provider in some scenarios
• Vital Signs: based on scenario

Collaborators and Contributors

The OpenRN project is led by Chippewa Valley Technical College, and the textbooks are being collaboratively written with faculty from Wisconsin technical colleges. The books will be reviewed by statewide nursing faculty, deans, healthcare alliance members, and other industry representatives to ensure the content is current and accurate.

The OER Nursing textbooks are written based on the State Nursing curriculum established by the Wisconsin Technical College System, and include: Pharmacology, Skills, Nursing Fundamentals, Mental Health & Community Concepts, and Management & Professional Concepts.

EMS Paramedic and Prehospital Assets

Acadicus comes with a library of pre-hospital assets that can be used to stage a wide variety of simulation scenarios. These include paramedic and EMS assets, among others. These can be configured with controls for animations, vital signs, and other interactions. During live simulations, instructors or simulation technicians use the Simulation Manager to manipulate characters in the scene in real-time.

Hardware Specifications

This post covers technical specifications and considerations for making the most of your virtual simulations.  Acadicus provides both VR and non-VR access, and can also be streamed to video conferencing platforms like Zoom, WebEx, Microsoft Teams and others.

Overview

Internet Connection

• Minimum Required (for a single user on a local network): 10Mbps down and 3Mbps up
• Recommended (supports several users on a local network): 100Mbps down and 10Mbps up
• Hardwired ethernet connection required (wifi could work if needed, but isn’t officially supported)
• TCP/UDP must be opened for port 9966, specifically for host 104.237.140.185 and port 8090 open for 104.237.140.185
