Dynamic Cardiology

Miles Johnson was recently released from the hospital after treatment for Congestive Heart Failure. He will progress into cardiac arrest due to a heart attack. This scenario is designed to be used as a live, instructor-led scenario and is compatible with both VR and Non-VR mode.

Pediatric Airway Distress

Luisa is an asthmatic patient who is having severe symptoms today due to exposure to flowers. This scenario is designed to be used as a live, instructor-led scenario and is compatible with both VR and Non-VR mode. The focus of this scenario is on treating an acute pediatric asthma patient.  The patient will improve with standard treatment of nebulizers and anti-inflammatories.

Case 1

Geriatric CHF_AHF

Miles was recently released from the hospital after treatment for Congestive Heart Failure. He has now returned to the ER with similar symptoms.

The student will be expected to act as the team leader in caring for a CHF patient that becomes an AHF patient. The focus should be on the recognition that the CPAP is causing a drop in preload after being applied, and should be removed for alternative treatment. Intubation should be the last resort only after other treatments are exhausted. 

Case 1

Adult Asthmatic Patient

Amit is an asthmatic patient who is having severe symptoms today that his regular medications were unable to control. 

The student will be expected to act as the team leader in caring for an acute asthma patient This patient scenario is designed to be fairly simple and could be used for all levels of care. The focus of this scenario is on treating an acute asthma patient who will improve with standard treatment of nebulizers and anti-inflammatories. 

Case 1

Adult Tension Pneumothorax

Simon is a truck driver and he stopped into the ER because he is having fairly severe right-sided chest pain along with shortness of breath.

The student will be expected to act as the team leader in caring for a patient experiencing simple pneumothorax progressing into a tension pneumothorax. Correct needle thoracostomy will relieve the pressure and the patient will recover.

Geriatric Sepsis

Miles has been seen recently for a severe Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), and his symptoms have gotten worse over the past 3-4 days and now he feels sick overall.

The student will be expected to act as the team leader in caring for a geriatric sepsis patient. Aggressive fluid administration is associated with better outcomes in the treatment and prevention of Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS) as well as better overall outcomes including hospital discharge. The focus of this simulation is the proper treatment of a geriatric sepsis patient.

Bill has been in EMS since 1997 and EMS Education and simulation since 2008. Bill is a graduate of St. Petersburg College with an A.S. in EMS and an A.A. in Liberal Arts. He attended the University of Florida where he earned his B.S. in Telecommunication in June of 2007. Bill earned his Master’s in Public Health from the University of South Florida in December of 2012. Bill is currently leading efforts to help faculty learn and utilize technology, including Virtual Reality, in all aspects of education at Madison College in Madison Wisconsin.

Bill’s current title is Faculty in Academic Technology in the Madison College Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). Bill continues to be involved in EMS Education on the Local, State, and National level.
